‘Our passion for tourism runs in the family. We benefitted from our father’s and great-grandfather’s foresight – now it’s our turn to continue this tradition. In our minds, developing tourism in our region is something of a family obligation and we have many plans and ideas for making Hochgurgl an even more attractive winter sports destination.’

A family of tourism pioneers…

Hosts by tradition and fourth-generation innovators

It all started with Martinus Scheiber – Alban and Attila Scheiber’s great-grandfather – and his unerring instinct for tourism. He built Alpine Club huts including, in 1881, the Ramolhaus at 3,006m above sea level – the Ötztal Alps’ first mountain refuge. He also built Obergurgl’s first hotel, and his son Angelus Scheiber carried on the pioneering spirit by constructing the panoramic Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road linking the Ötztal and Passeier Valleys. Moreover, Angelus founded Hochgurgl. It was Attila and Alban’s grandfather who also had the idea of building ski lifts and a hotel on the Angerer Alm. His words, ‘there’s a lot of sunshine up there and it would be a superb place for skiing’ are still quoted today. In February 1961 the TOP Hotel Hochgurgl and the Hotel Angerer Alm welcomed their first skiing guests. The rest is history.

The succeeding generations have not rested on their founding fathers’ laurels. What began in 1961 with a one-seater lift, Angelus’ son Alban Scheiber – father to Attila and Alban – and his wife Lotte developed into one of the Alps’ most modern ski resorts. This success story continues with sons Alban and Attila and the active support of wives Jasmin and Sabine.

Continuous investment

The Scheiber family’s current array of facilities is wide-ranging. In addition to the lifts and cable cars at the resort – one of the world’s top ten – they keep investing in their 5-star superior TOP Hotel Hochgurgl, six sports shops, Hochgurgl’s TOP mountain gastronomy and other amenities. Remaining faithful to the family tradition and corporate philosophy of running the mountain lifts as a not-for-profit business, they reinvest all operating gains into improving the resort and their guests’ comfort. To this end, the brothers created the TOP Mountain Crosspoint – a highlight attraction in the Ötztal Valley. For them – and the many visitors – this is a dream come true: a motorbike museum high up in the Alps with a range of unique and exciting exhibits housed in spectacular architecture and featuring a superb restaurant as well as magnificent panoramic view.
